The Smackdown Tag Team Championships were created in 2016 as a result of the 2016 brand split. They did not share lineage with their RAW counterparts. The Usos hold the records for longest single reign at 182 days and most days overall as champions at 329. They are also tied with the current champions The New Day for most reigns at 3.
At the time of the 2016 brand extension, the New Day were reigning WWE Tag Team Champions, and as such were awarded the RAW Tag Team Championships upon their selection to the red brand. In response, Smackdown Commissioner Shane McMahon and then-General Manager Daniel Bryan established the Smackdown Tag Team Championships and held a tournament to determine the inaugural champions. That tournament was won by Heath Slater & Rhyno.
Since March 2017, the Usos and the New Day have dominated the Smackdown tag team division, alternating reigns with the titles, with the only exceptions being the Bludgeon Brothers winning the belts at Wrestlemania 34 and The Bar winning the belts at SDLive 1000.
After failing to win the titles at Super Showdown, The Bar won the titles at the 1000th episode of Smackdown after an assist from the Big Show.
